Jeff Clark - Surfing
Biography
Jeff, a pioneer of the big wave surfing movement, is best known for bringing the infamous "Maverick's" surf break in Half Moon Bay, California to the public's attention. From 1975-1990, he surfed Maverick's alone as no one else dared to tackle what many consider to be the most challenging wave in the world. By the early 1990's, word of Clark's adventures began to spread, and since then, many of the world's best surfers have come to Maverick's for the ultimate test of their prowess. There they are presented with waves that have crested at over 50 feet, remarkably strong currents and dangerously shallow reefs. The break claimed its first casualty in 1994 in world-renowned surfer Mark Foo, a tragedy reported in the pages of Outside Magazine by John Krakauer and the subject of a major motion picture in development with Tom Hanks Productions. The ever-dangerous Maverick's has been the subject of jaw-dropping photography, award-winning documentaries, and several major big wave contests directed by Clark, most recently presented by Quiksilver in 2001-2002.
